Prep Your Deck Right Before Staining

Deck cleaning removes the gray weathered surface, mildew and failing finish from a wood or composite deck with a low-pressure wash. Frontline Home Services, a veteran-owned company in Bellevue, NE, cleans decks across the Omaha metro. If you're planning to stain your deck this season, cleaning it first isn't optional. It's the whole job. Stain applied over dirt, mildew, or weathered gray wood won't bond, won't last, and won't look right. Andy Simmons at Frontline Home Services has cleaned wood and composite decks across the Omaha metro for homeowners who want the prep done properly before they invest in a stain coat. Frontline carries a 5-star rating across 42 Google reviews and is BBB accredited. Call (402) 218-0676 to get on the schedule.

Frontline is based in Bellevue at 2503 Century Rd and runs jobs throughout Sarpy County and the wider metro, Papillion, La Vista, Ralston, Millard, and beyond. Nebraska summers put real wear on outdoor wood: UV fade, humidity-driven mildew, and the freeze-thaw cycle every spring mean most decks need a thorough cleaning before they're ready for any protective finish. Andy works 7 days a week, so you're not waiting until next Saturday to get a call back.

Why It Matters

Dirty Wood Rejects Stain

Skipping the clean is the reason most deck stain jobs fail within a season.

Wood is porous. That's what makes it beautiful and what makes it a problem when it's loaded with mildew, tannins, and grime. Stain needs to penetrate the wood fiber to protect it, and it can't do that through a layer of biological growth and weathered gray cells. Most stain manufacturers actually void their warranty if the surface wasn't properly cleaned before application. Frontline cleans the deck first, checks the wood's moisture content, and lets you know if the boards are ready to accept stain or if they need more dry time. That kind of honest assessment before the stain goes down is what separates a deck that looks good for five years from one that's peeling by next spring. We also handle patio cleaning and fence cleaning if you're doing a full exterior refresh at the same time.

Our Process

How Andy Cleans a Deck Before Staining

Call (402) 218-0676
  1. Inspect and Pre-Treat

Andy walks the deck before any water hits it, checking for loose boards, popped nails, and concentrated mold or mildew spots that need a pre-treatment solution before the wash. Composite decks get flagged separately; they need lower pressure and a different cleaning chemistry than wood.

  2. Controlled Pressure Wash

Wood decks get cleaned at pressure settings that open the grain without raising or splintering the fiber. Too much pressure and you're sanding with water, leaving a fuzzy surface that holds stain unevenly. Andy keeps it dialed in based on the wood species and condition, not a one-size number.

  3. Final Check and Dry-Time Advice

After the wash, the deck gets a final walkthrough. Andy will tell you exactly how long to wait before staining, typically 48 to 72 hours depending on weather and wood density. In Nebraska's humid summers, rushing that window is how you trap moisture under the finish.

Wood vs. Composite: Different Materials, Different Approach

  • Weathered deck before cleaning

    Wood Decks

Cedar, pine, and pressure-treated lumber respond well to controlled water pressure and oxygen-based cleaners that lift mildew and gray weathering without damaging the grain. Wood decks typically need annual cleaning to stay stain-ready.

  • Deck after cleaning and staining

    Composite Decks

Composite boards are sensitive to high pressure. It can scratch or cloud the surface coating. Andy uses lower PSI and manufacturer-safe detergents so the deck comes out clean without any surface damage.

  • Deck boards and railing, before and after staining

    Older or Neglected Decks

Decks that haven't been cleaned in multiple seasons often have deep mildew penetration or significant gray oxidation. These need a two-step process: a chemical pre-treatment to break down the buildup, followed by a thorough rinse. Andy will tell you upfront if that's what the job requires.

Deck Cleaning Paired with the Rest of Your Exterior

deck cleaning work, professional service in Bellevue, NE
Most homeowners who book a deck cleaning are also dealing with dirty siding, grimy windows, or a fence that needs the same treatment. Frontline handles all of it. Bundling your deck clean with a house washing or window washing visit on the same day cuts down on scheduling headaches and usually means a better overall result, Andy can sequence the work so rinse water from the siding doesn't dirty the freshly cleaned deck boards. Check out the full list of available services to see what makes sense to combine.

How long should I wait after deck cleaning before staining?
In the Omaha metro area, plan on 48 to 72 hours minimum after a pressure wash before applying any stain or sealant. Nebraska's summer humidity can extend that window, if the wood still feels damp or shows a dark color, it's not ready. Andy will give you a specific dry-time estimate based on your deck's wood species and the weather forecast for your area at the time of service. Rushing this step is the most common reason deck stains peel prematurely.
Does deck cleaning remove black mold and mildew stains?
Yes, in most cases. Surface mildew and black algae staining respond well to the pre-treatment solutions Frontline uses before the pressure wash. Deep mold penetration into the wood fiber is harder to fully eliminate with cleaning alone, if the staining goes more than a few millimeters into the board, Andy will tell you honestly whether cleaning will get it clean enough for stain or whether those boards need to be replaced. He won't oversell the result.
Can you clean a composite deck without damaging it?
Yes, but it requires a completely different approach than wood. Composite decking, Trex, TimberTech, Azek, and similar brands, can be permanently scratched or clouded by high-pressure washing. Frontline uses a low-pressure soft wash method with detergents that are safe for composite surface coatings. If you've had a previous company rough up your composite boards with too much pressure, Andy can assess the damage and clean what's salvageable. We'd rather tell you the truth upfront than give you false expectations.
How often should a deck in the Omaha area be professionally cleaned?
At minimum, once a year, and for decks that see heavy use or sit under tree canopy, twice a year is reasonable. Omaha's climate is hard on wood: humid summers accelerate mildew growth, and the freeze-thaw cycles every spring drive moisture into wood grain that hasn't been sealed. A deck that's cleaned and stained on a regular cycle stays structurally sound longer and costs less to maintain over time than one that's neglected for several seasons and then requires board replacement.
Will deck cleaning remove old stain or sealant before I apply a new coat?
Cleaning removes surface contamination, mildew, and loose or flaking finish, but it's not the same as stripping. If your deck has a thick build-up of old solid-color stain or a failed film finish, a chemical stripper may be needed before the new stain coat will adhere properly. Andy will assess the existing finish condition during the cleaning visit and let you know if stripping is necessary. That's a separate step, and he'll give you a straight answer on whether your deck needs it before recommending additional work. Contact Frontline Home Services for an accurate estimate on your specific deck.
Do you clean decks in Papillion and La Vista as well as Bellevue?
Yes. Frontline runs deck cleaning jobs throughout Sarpy County and the wider Omaha metro, Papillion, La Vista, Ralston, Millard, and surrounding neighborhoods. Andy works 7 days a week, so scheduling across the metro is straightforward. Call (402) 218-0676 to confirm availability in your specific area and get on the calendar before the spring rush fills up.
